white adds to the elegant feel of the garden. Plants include pink roses, masterwort (Astrantia sp.), purple geraniums, meadow-rue (Thalictrum sp.), blue irises, bellflower (Campanula sp.), phlox, hydrangeas, ‘Jack Frost’ large-leaf brunnera (Brunnera macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’) and ferns, all with a backdrop of hornbeam and yew hedging.

Gravel. People have mixed views on the functionality of gravel; I’m in the camp that loves it. While it may not work well in every situation — for example, on steep slopes or where wheelchair access is necessary — it’s a material that’s from the earth and therefore adds to a garden’s natural feel. It crunches when walked upon, adding another layer of interest to the garden experience.
Consider Width Traditionally, most residential paths, particularly walkways, are 4 feet wide, allowing two average-size adults to walk side by side through a space. However, this is a guide, not a rule. Begin by asking yourself what you want the path to do for you, functionally and philosophically. A path that’s wider than average, perhaps 5 to 8 feet, allows groups of people to walk together and converse. It can also be used as additional entertaining space. Side garden paths, as shown here, can be much narrower, perhaps only 2 to 3 feet wide. The narrower width causes visitors to walk single file through the space and slows them down long enough to notice focal points or garden vignettes. The narrower path is also philosophical: We all experience life individually and our journey is, in reality, our own.
Zigzag. The zigzag pattern is historically seen in the yatsuhashi or, “eight bridges,” paths of Japan. The cultural theory was that evil spirits could not navigate 90-degree angles, so paths laid out in this manner provided safety. This shape lends a Zen, meditative feeling to a path. Additionally, it slows the visitor down, allowing him or her to enjoy the garden. Zigzag paths are also quite appropriate in contemporary spaces, and the lines can be simplified to make them appropriate choices for more traditional spaces as well.
This narrow path deliberately slows visitors and forces them to interact with the plants. Don’t underestimate the immense value of that branch that grows just a little too low or long and extends into the personal space that a path generally provides. A good gardener recognizes its tactile importance and purposefully leaves it in place. It only looks serendipitous, and looks can be deceiving.
The rustic, almost primitive placement of these steppingstones lends an air of antiquity to this secondary path. Their offset pattern is contemplative, giving the path a mystical sense similar to a labyrinth.

Bubble rock. Attract wild birds to your yard by providing them with a source of fresh water for drinking and bathing on a DIY bubble rock. This small, homemade fountain is more appealing to birds than a traditional birdbath because the sound of moving water makes it easier for wild birds to locate. Bonus: Mosquitoes tend not to lay eggs in moving water, making this a better choice than a still birdbath if mosquitoes are prevalent in your area.

A meandering garden path, however, can be much narrower, as the intention is for guests to follow it to discover what lies ahead. “If you want someone to linger,” says Ayers, “curve the path around focal points, like a tree, boulder or berm of land. The most engaging paths curve around points of interest rather than arbitrarily twist and turn.”

Bench with a view. What garden is complete without a bench? Before positioning yours, take the time to consider both what you will see from the bench and what views you will have of the bench from elsewhere in the yard. Consider a view of a water element or vegetable garden, or position a bench at the end of a winding path that can be seen from the house.
Colorful trellis. Why stick with plain wood when you can have glossy purple, chartreuse or fire engine red? Make a bold color choice with your trellises and watch your garden come to life.
Go vertical with your flowers. To block the view of two-story neighbors, landscape architect Bartron bolted this tall custom metal trellis onto the garage wall. She added colorful Orange Clock Vine for additional privacy.

חצץ לשבילים Loose materials. Although they might seem like a low-budget cop-out, loose materials like gravel, crushed rock, compacted shale and decomposed granite can be an inexpensive yet elegant choice, especially when edged by a richer material, like stone or brick. Advantages include permeability, low cost and ease of installation.
שימוש במרצפות בגינה Tile, like brick, offers a broad palette of styles, ranging from crisp, contemporary forms to old-world Mediterranean. Because tile is thin and unable to bear much weight on its own, it is always mortared to a solid foundation. Be careful to avoid slick surfaces, since they can become dangerously slippery when wet.
Bender Board The basics: This is a plastic lumber made from 100 percent recycled polyethylene plastic and is very flexible and durable. It generally comes in 20-foot lengths and often has a wood-like "grain" on the surface. If you want curving beds with a border that almost disappears, bender board could be for you. Cost: $3.50 to $5.50 per linear foot installed
A smooth and low-lying concrete curbing like this separates the lawn from the rest of the landscape and helps protect the other plants while you mow the lawn. I love the contrast here of the cast concrete with the two types of stone.
Adding a focal point at the end of your garden will automatically draw the eye in that direction, visually lengthening the space. Interchanging a section of the fence with this stone wall and bright shutters provides a functional focal point. The windows in the wall let light in, making sure that the wall doesn't completely block the view beyond. A fountain, urn, or statuette at the end of a garden would serve a similar use.
Sectioning off segments of your garden in strong shapes on a diagonal will make it look like your garden is wider and longer. Define areas of grass, pavement, and landscape with borders of rocks or bricks to break up big sections and add texture and interest.

Convert Part of Your Garden to Native Plants Working native plants into you garden can help cut down on water and fertilizer use and provide habitat islands for native birds, bees, butterflies and other pollinators. You may not be ready to trade in your existing garden for an all-native landscape, but consider adding some native species to mixed beds or devoting a section of your backyard to native, pollinator-friendly plants.
Create a Focal Point “A focal point in the garden is something that draws the eye. It can be anything from a specimen tree, a beautiful pot or a water feature,” Pezzimenti says
Repeat, Repeat, Repeat One great way to give your garden a professionally designed look is to repeat the same plants and hardscaping materials in different places throughout the landscape. Avoid picking one plant of each type, as this tends to appear jumbled — even in a wild English cottage-style garden, plants look best when repeated or planted in clusters. The same goes for other materials: Choose just a few hardscaping materials for paths, pots, planters and outdoor furniture, and repeat, repeat, repeat.

Moon gates are a traditional feature of Chinese gardens, and this fabricated steel version leaves no doubt in a visitor’s mind as to what type of garden lies beyond. Notice that this gate is open, allowing free access. It is perfect for setting the mood in situations where privacy is not an issue.
