One complaint the homeowners had with their former setup was that they had to constantly bend over to load and unload the laundry, so Mayhall elevated both appliances. Sounds like a simple solution, right? Well, the process was much more involved than expected.Contractor Mark Fredricksen helped with the logistics of elevating these large appliances. First, to have easy access to the water’s shut-off valve, they had to relocate it to the basement. Second, they had to make sure the custom-made cabinetry would fit around the washer and dryer. Mayhall, when designing, also left a few inches around the appliances, which will be helpful if they ever need to be moved or replaced. Lastly, the team had to prepare for possible leaks. Because this is a high-traffic area of the house, the family was not worried about undetected ones. Just in case, though, the storage under the washer and dryer is not attached to the rest of the cabinets, making replacement easy if it gets damaged. With the exterior door being a popular place to come and go, the designer had to make sure the washer and dryer would not be in the way. Luckily, Marin says it has never been a problem because the machines are located...
The side opposite the cabinets acts as a closet for the family. The McFaddens keep their shoes on the main level to make coming and going easier. The stacked basket organizer keeps the room cleaner while still allowing them to store the shoes near the door. The wall hooks are great for backpacks, coats, scarves and hats, and again, they organize everything neatly in one place.Mudroom hooks: Anthropologie; storage baskets: MarshallsGeneral contractor: Mark Frederiksen at Timeless Custom DesignCabinet glazer: Gayle Hixson at Studio 117MoreTrending Now: 10 Ideas From Popular New Laundry RoomsMore Rooms of the Day
“After” photos by Tessa NeustadtLaundry Room at a GlanceWho lives here: A family of four with a dog and catLocation: Pasadena, CaliforniaSize: 63 square feet (5.9 square meters)Designer: Stefani SteinBefore: The laundry room lacked many functions the family wanted. After living in the home for many years they decided it was time to remodel this room.
The dog tends to hang out in the laundry room a lot. The clients wanted to make him comfortable there by adding a dog bed under the folding area.To the left of that area, Mom got her pullout laundry baskets. Now she can fold clean clothes and stack them in each family member’s basket for them to pick up.
The laundry room also includes a small landing zone. The materials from the other side of the room continue over to this space, including a mix of solid and leather cabinet pulls and the butcher block countertop. Stein also brought the gray-and-white tile over to complete the corner space. “We didn’t want to just leave it barren,” she says.
Rollout wire baskets. The wish list for this laundry room remodel was long: folding area, drying rack, storage, pullout laundry baskets, a stackable washer and dryer, a utility closet, cat food storage, pet water station and a dog bed. But the project now includes all of those elements. In the center of the image are rollout laundry baskets. The homeowner can fold clean clothes on the butcher-block folding table and then stack them in each family member’s basket.
