Who: Chris Chumbley of USI Design & Remodeling
Where: Southlake, Texas
In his own words: “Don’t be afraid of customization. The excitement surrounding a personal project is much higher.”
Imagine a space that’s a true reflection of you. Whether it’s a room that showcases keepsakes or one with colors that evoke vacation bliss, a home tailored to your lifestyle is filled with memories. If your house doesn’t make you smile, it’s time to make the space your own.
“Personalized design is for everyone,” says Southlake remodeler Chris Chumbley, a partner with Gordon Zoellner at USI Design & Remodeling. “You just need to pay attention to what you want and take advantage of the possibilities.”

Different strokes. Chumbley revels in the endless challenges and excitement of home remodeling. “I like knocking on a different door every day and meeting people with different backgrounds, homes and needs,” he says. He finds it rewarding to see something he designs materialize rapidly: “I am in control of what I do, and I find that very freeing.”
Views on hues. Many people feel lost when it comes to design direction, so Chumbley implements color tests to help his clients find their aesthetic. For example, he shows them different cabinet and countertop pairings — such as light and light, and dark and light — to help them determine the best look for them.

1. Tap Into Your Heritage
Add elements that pay homage to your background to create a personalized feel, Chumbley suggests. A client in Hurst was from Mexico, and he incorporated subtle nods to her birth country throughout the kitchen. “The Talavera tiles were handmade in Mexico,” Chumbley says. He banded them around the hood and backsplash and used authentic Saltillo tiles for the floor.

2. Let Treasures Inspire You
Want to give your space a unique flair? “Don’t overlook items you love as design inspiration,” Chumbley says. For example, he spied a Western rug and gun in this otherwise traditional living room in Southlake. After discovering that they belonged to the clients’ daughter, who competed in rodeo beauty pageants, Chumbley created a Montana-inspired space to give the items their due. “I titled it ‘Western Heaven,’” he says.

3. Evoke Your Favorite Locale
Chumbley suggests choosing colors with your designer reminiscent of places you love. He selected Tuscan hues for this amateur photographer’s kitchen in Dallas. “The first thing the client showed me were his pictures of Italy and his Italian-inspired bathroom,” Chumbley says. “I saw his passion for the landscape and architecture, so I captured Tuscan tones in the new barrel ceiling.”
