Christmas DIY: Ombré Christmas Tree Mural
Take a fresh approach to the traditional Christmas tree and paint your own in the stylish ombré look
For Christmas, there’s nothing like the sight and smell of a freshly cut fir tree that’s decorated in flashing lights, sparkles or memorabilia. I love it! But perhaps the humble Christmas tree can have a makeover? I’ve designed a wall-hung, contemporary interpretation of the traditional Christmas tree that incorporates bold splashes of colour in simple shapes. I’ve added bling by incorporating sparkling brooches from various member’s of the family for a touch of nostalgia.
You will need
• Metallic silver and cyan textile inks
• Large semi sheer white curtain, approximately 145cm x 250cm
• Paint brushes
• Template
• Pencil, tape and scissors
• 7mm dowel rod(s), cut to width of curtain
• Removable hooks
• Brooches (optional)
STEP 1
Tape the templates together to form one large template. Iron curtain and lightly press a seam down the middle or use pins as a guide to indicate the centre. Place curtain over template and match centre. Lightly draw template onto fabric.

STEP 2
Paint solid silver on the top branch. Add two teaspoons of blue (or preferred colour) to the silver pot. Stir until colour has darkened slightly. Test on a piece of paper first and add more colour to silver, if required. Paint the next branch. Repeat with the other branches, adding colour to the silver pot as you go to create an ombré effect.

Now this is where the kids can help… Just paint and have fun!
STEP 3
Thread rod through top of curtain and hang from removable hooks. I cut the bottom of the curtain off as it ran deep. I then sewed a channel along the bottom edge to house another rod. This is not necessary, especially if you don’t have a sewing machine, but will allow the mural to sit perfectly straight.

STEP 4 (optional)
I thought it would be fun to include some brooches for added sparkle!
