Delineate the Space If a kitchen island won’t fit, you may consider adding a table, both for dining and as an extra work surface. Aside from the obvious benefits this brings, a table can also mark a distinction between the kitchen and living room, creating the feeling that they’re two separate spaces.
Layered Lighting As soon as you’ve planned your kitchen’s layout, think about where you’ll locate the lighting. Complement functional spotlights with strategically placed task lights to create a lighting design that adds depth and practicality to your space. In this project, pendants hang above the island. They illuminate the island work surface and, along with lighting above the upper cabinets, create an ambient glow. Undercabinet lighting brightens the perimeter countertops. Recessed ceiling lights illuminate the center of the room and the dining area.
Wood Features That Warm Up White Kitchens As we’ve continued to report, white cabinets aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, 43% of renovating homeowners will choose white cabinets, according to the 2019 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study. But that doesn’t mean the entire kitchen will become white on white on white. Warmth is key to any balanced design scheme, and the quickest way to provide that is with good old-fashioned wood. Many designers are introducing wood in kitchens with white cabinets to lessen the stark feel and add texture.
The shower entry (not pictured) is curbless, and the flooring is slip-resistant tile. The fold-down bench seat is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the space has sufficient room for a caregiver to assist. The natural stone shower walls have plywood blocking behind them so that grab bars can be installed in the future.

The large-format (12-by-24-inch) tiles continue from the floor up the walls of the shower and serve as wainscoting around the rest of the room. This makes the space feel larger and creates a cohesive look.

Winding pathways combined with layered plantings of varying heights can create the illusion of land rising and falling, as shown in this level backyard in Washington, D.C. Emphasize this trick of the eye even further with the addition of low berms in the planting beds and a few vertical elements, and a yard that started out as flat will feel more dynamic.

The easiest way to create a shaded spot is to push seating right up against the wall or fence that gets the least amount of sun. Tucking it into a leafy border is even better since the plants will help form a natural canopy.

I recommend paring down and investing in a set that nests nicely and takes up less space in your cabinet. The containers will look good and be easier to keep organized.
