California - House
simple car port. we don't want a garage. we will be building a separate big metal garage. in terms of vehicle storage we just want a car port. Something simple like this is perfect. car port should be situated in a way where you exit vehicle and walk through a bit of the landscape to get to the front door. so definitely not attached to the house as it doesn't rain enough to worry about that. car port should not be on slab. car port should be on gravel with geo textile grid to hold it all together. car port should be oversized for 2 vehicles to full open doors with 3'+ space on all sides and in between two vehicles (think truck not car)
cant find an image to describe what we want. Idea: metal trellis built into house alongside the larger south facing windows. vine can grow up trellis and across overhang that protects window from too much solar gain and the vine can become a part of this transition between the outdoors and indoors while also providing the benefit of blocking excessive sunlight in the warm months and having a cooling effect from blocking direct sunlight on portions of the exterior albeit maybe a very small effect.
8" NON-OSB SIP panels. 8" for maximum thermal efficiency. non osb for reduction of use of wood, increased life span and less chemicals. Same panels should be used for roof as well. We can reduce panel thickness if needed for cost but then that takes away from getting close to a somewhat passive house.
Exposed truss with tongue and groove this pic is pretty much exactly what we want.
