Backyard
Good example of enclosing fireplace patio area with plants A hedge of shrubby yew pine (Podocarpus macrophyllus var. maki) will eventually fill in and create a living privacy screen. A ginkgo tree (Ginkgo biloba ‘Jade Butterflies’) anchors the corner next to the hedge, adding more leaf shape, color and texture to the backyard space. Atlas fescue (Festuca mairei) frames the outdoor lounge chair, creating a loose, green screen between the back stoop.
Plantings under japanese maple: The tree is underplanted with Japanese forest grass (Hakonechloa macra). “It’s really soft and will completely fill out that space and spill onto the paving,” Orchard says. “It turns a nice orange in late autumn and is fantastic when you get the wind through it — it’s almost like water rippling.”
