This cozy sanctuary has been transformed from a drab sun-blasted deck into an inspirational home-above-home get away! Our clients work and relax out here on the daily, and when entertaining is cool again, they plan to host friends in their beautiful new space. The old deck was removed, the roof was repaired and new paver flooring, railings, a pergola and gorgeous garden furnishings & features were installed to create a one of a kind urban escape.

Louisa, San Clemente Coastal Modern Architecture The brief for this modern coastal home was to create a place where the clients and their children and their families could gather to enjoy all the beauty of living in Southern California. Maximizing the lot was key to unlocking the potential of this property so the decision was made to excavate the entire property to allow natural light and ventilation to circulate through the lower level of the home. A courtyard with a green wall and olive tree act as the lung for the building as the coastal breeze brings fresh air in and circulates out the old through the courtyard. The concept for the home was to be living on a deck, so the large expanse of glass doors fold away to allow a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoors and feeling of being out on the deck is felt on the interior. A huge cantilevered beam in the roof allows for corner to completely disappear as the home looks to a beautiful ocean view and Dana Point harbor in the distance. All of the spaces throughout the home have a connection to the outdoors and this creates a light, bright and healthy environment. Passive design principles were employed to ensure the building is as energy efficient as possible. Solar panels keep the building off the grid and and deep overhangs help in reducing the solar heat gains of the building. Ultimately this home has become a place that the families can all enjoy together as the grand kids create those memories of spending time at the beach. Images and Video by Aandid Media.

PITCH Concepts

An intimate park-like setting with low-maintenance materials replaced an aging wooden rooftop deck at this Bucktown home. Three distinct spaces create a full outdoor experience, starting with a landscaped dining area surrounded by large trees and greenery. The illusion is that of a secret garden rather than an urban rooftop deck. A sprawling green area is the perfect spot to soak in the summer sun or play an outdoor game. In the front is the main entertainment area, fully outfitted with a louvered roof, fire table, and built-in seating. The space maintains the atmosphere of a garden with shrubbery and flowers. It’s the ideal place to host friends and family with a custom kitchen that is complete with a Big Green Egg and an outdoor television.

Holmdel, NJ Ipe and Azek Deck with Cedar Pergola

Deck Pros

This large deck was built in Holmdel, NJ. The flooring is Ipe hardwood. The rail is Azek brand synthetic railing system. The pergola is clear cedar that has been primed and painted. The columns are 10" square Permacast brand. The high underside of the deck is covered with solid Ipe skirting. This blocks the view of the deck under-structure from people enjoying the lower paver patio. Low voltage lights were added to the rail posts, in the pergola and in the stair risers. These lights add a nice ambiance to the deck, as well as safety.

Decorare e arredare il tuo balcone, rendere la propria terrazza un luogo accogliente e farne uno spazio living di tutto rispetto ti darà uno stimolo in più per godere dell’aria aperta, specialmente quando le stagioni si fanno più calde. Prima di iniziare una qualunque decorazione del proprio balcone, è opportuno chiedersi quali attività vorrai compiere in terrazzo: la risposta dipenderà dalle dimensioni e dal luogo in cui sorge l’abitazione. Qui sotto troverai alcuni consigli per decorare il tuo terrazzo per creare lo spazio perfetto per cene all’aperto e serate con gli amici.

Come arredare un terrazzo

Esistono oggi numerose soluzioni per ottenere il massimo da terrazzi e balconi : soluzioni che spaziano dalla costruzione di porticati e pergolati in legno o in muratura, a un’ampia scelta di mobili da esterno, a opzioni più green che prevedono il ricorso a fiori e piante da terrazzo. Altre soluzioni sfruttano lo spazio della propria terrazza per creare un orto domestico, o addirittura una piccola fattoria, tendenza che sta prendendo sempre più piede, soprattutto in ambienti cittadini. Quali mobili da esterno scegliere?

Che il tuo balcone sia stretto e lungo oppure spazioso, non è possibile rinunciare a un tavolino e a qualche sedia: nulla è più rilassante che sedersi all’aria aperta - attrezzare la terrazza di un’area relax è molto importante. La scelta degli elementi d’arredo e dei materiali per terrazzi e balconi dipende dal gusto personale e dalle esigenze: il legno avrà un effetto più naturale ma sarà più impegnativo da mantenere, la plastica si rivela la soluzione più pratica, mentre i mobili da esterno in alluminio sono i più cari. Costruire tettoie o pergolati in legno ti darà l’opportunità di decorare il terrazzo anche con lampade da esterno, oppure sfruttare le caratteristiche delle piante rampicanti per colorare il tutto di un verde naturale. Aggiungere invece un barbecue può rivelarsi una scelta felice se si ha intenzione di utilizzare lo spazio per invitare amici e familiari a feste e cene. È importante inoltre valutare se attrezzare il balcone o la terrazza con delle tende da sole, in modo da riuscire a sfruttarlo anche durante le ore più calde e potersi godere pranzi all’aperto anche in estate.

Quali piante scegliere per un terrazzo fiorito?

Nulla è più triste di un balcone spoglio, in cui l’unica decorazione è data dalle linee sinuose della ringhiere in ferro battuto. Decorare il balcone o il terrazzo con piante e fiori ti regalerà enormi soddisfazioni, chiedendoti in cambio solo qualche minuto al giorno del tuo tempo da dedicare alla cura. È opportuno valutare se e quanto il tuo balcone è esposto al sole. Ci sono piante e fiori che necessitano di più luce di altre, quindi è bene scegliere quelle adatte. Se desideri avere un balcone colorato tutto l’anno, decoralo con piante sempreverdi, anche se nulla ti vieta di utilizzare piante stagionali, per rendere il tuo balcone sempre diverso stagione dopo stagione.

Allestire un orto in una terrazza

Se ti piace cucinare e sei amante delle piante aromatiche, rendere il tuo balcone o terrazzo un piccolo orto è più semplice di quanto si pensi: basta scegliere le piante giuste, perché non tutte si prestano alla coltivazione casalinga. Con dei vasi o vasche abbastanza capienti, è possibile coltivare insalata, pomodori, melanzane e peperoncini. Se il tuo spazio a disposizione invece è ridotto a qualche vaso, i classici rosmarino, prezzemolo, basilico e salvia possono essere tranquillamente piantati in spazi ristretti. Se vuoi osare un po’ di più, hai la possibilità di coltivare in vaso anche piante da frutto specifiche, dette “a sviluppo nano”. Ti regaleranno ottimi frutti in miniatura, ma pur sempre buoni. Terrazzi e balconi sono spazi ridotti, ma possono regalare ottime soddisfazioni!
