June Scott DesignThis garden was designed to celebrate panoramic views of the San Gabriel mountains. Horizontal bands of slate tile from the interior of the mid-century home wrap around the house’s perimeter and extend to the rear pool area, inviting the family outdoors. With a pool framed by mature trees, a sunken seating area, fruit trees, and a modest lawn for a young family, the landscape provides a wide range of opportunities for play, entertaining and relaxation. Parker Landscape DesignA pondless water feature constructed for beauty. Shelves of Moss rock boulder were constructed at precise elevations to create a tranquil sound of flowing water. Water feature was designed for safety - our customer has small children and they did not want any depth of standing water. Lighting accentuates the surrounding landscape, water and boulder to provide a wonderful evening ambiance.
Legacy Landscape Design, LLCThis was a neat job in it's scope. There was a nice Victorian style home sitting on lots of land but no landscape or usable space to speak of. We created separate spaces, including a vanishing edge natural feeling pool and built in spa. A cascading water feature linking an outdoor fireplace and built in grill. We also did a low maintenance driveway using an exposed aggregate, gray stained concrete with grass strip. The client supplied a greenhouse which we created a stone based and outdoor garden area for. It was all very natural and flowing. This garden was featured on HGTV's Ground Breaker Series. Mark Schisler, Legacy Landscapes, Inc.
Daniel Contelmo ArchitectsThis property was developed in the 1950’s with a relatively bare landscape. The rear yard was nothing special, but had some privacy. The owners set out to create mini gardens around the entire house. A koi pond was added first. Over time, plants were added that began creating pockets of spaces that gave each area a room-like feel. With each hole dug, rock was removed from it to install the pond or install a plant. The rock in the ground became the same rock used around the pond and used for stone walls. There is sun, shade, privacy, and the sound of water that stimulates the senses. The latest section of the master plan was to develop a more formal area (seen from the living room) with the diagonal blue stone set into the lawn. A picket fence separates it from a vegetable garden. A new fire pit is nestled among a row of hemlocks and rimmed shrubs.

Vanessa Morgan Garden DesignThe project brief was to re-design a tired existing pond that had been leaking, and to incorporate a new water feature.
The client wanted something different from the quite traditional look they had before, so we used corten steel to give the new pond a really crisp finish and to create a stepped water feature where the water very gently cascades over the edge of each level into the main body of water. Opposite the water feature we designed a floating deck area that catches the morning sun, and where we wanted to create a feeling of being wrapped up in nature - so the decking is surrounded by herbaceous planting and pond plants. The new pond needed to include fish (we created a holding pond for the existing fish and re-located them temporarily) and is a real destination in the garden as you walk down from the house.
One of the challenges with this site is that the pond is set into a bank - so one side is much lower than the other. To manage this transition in the landscape, we created tiered planting beds that wrap around the length of the pond and provide access into the water for wildlife via a pebble beach area.
We also re-designed a parterre which had sadly become a victim of box blight - using a combination of Hebe and Pittosporum within a framework of Yew, to update this feature.
