This plant combination offers a wonderful variety of textures and form. Lomandra 'Breeze' is a tough grass-like plant that thrives in the toughest conditions in both sun and shade. The Dianella variegata 'Tasmanian Tiger' offers a lovely texture with its variegated foliage and brightens shady areas. The succulent Echeveria agavoides 'Lipstick' provides a nice edge to the concrete pavers. Elfin thyme is planted between adjacent pavers. All plants have low water needs. This “Arizona Inspired” home draws on some of the couples’ favorite desert inspirations. The architecture honors the Wrightian design of The Arizona Biltmore, the courtyard raised planter beds feature labeled specimen cactus in the style of the Desert Botanical Gardens, and the expansive backyard offers a resort-style pool and cabana with plenty of entertainment space. Additional focal areas of landscape design include an outdoor living room in the front courtyard with custom steel fire trough, a shallow negative-edge fountain, and a rare “nurse tree” that was salvaged from a nearby site, sits in the corner of the courtyard – a unique conversation starter. The wash that runs on either side of the museum-glass hallway is filled with aloes, agaves and cactus. On the far end of the lot, a fire pit surrounded by desert planting offers stunning views both day and night of the Praying Monk rock formation on Camelback Mountain.

Beach side garden. Scott Lanlkford, Landscape Architect.
From the street, a round rock pathway leads to a small seating area next to the water with a small fire pit. Low maintenance, drought resistant and salt tolerant plantings were used in mass and clumps. This garden has become the focus of the neighborhood with many visitors stopping and enjoying what has become a neighborhood landmark

A contemporary garden for a family in South London. The planting is naturalistic and wildlife friendly, softening the sharp geometry employed in the hard landscaping. Seen here in summer with the echinacea, echinops and kniphofia in full bloom.

Do we need to speak to any other benefit of Western Redbud in early spring? These blooms are pollinator magnets - and delicious! As leaves fill in, they are a nearly translucent lime to apple green, allowing just the right amount of sun to break through the canopy.
Outside InStyle
South African, Costa Rican, and New Zealand plantings fill up the backyard garden beds.

While the Southern California drought is keeping homeowners water usage to a minimum, there are an abundance of plants that thrive on minimal amounts of water. A combination of drip irrigation systems and drought tolerant plants can keep your exterior spaces green and beautiful as well as water efficient.

'Dragon's Blood' sedum is nested among the slab buff sandstone steps. Small openings and cracks in boulders or along hardscape joints, provides 'micro-climates' for plants to thrive. The warmth trapped in the dense sandstone provides an advantage to a plant trying to survive Colorado's capricious weather throughout the year.
