The garden won the People’s Choice Award, Best Construction and a Gold Medal at RHS Hampton Court Garden Festival 2019. Commended for its ambition, creativity and strong theme the garden was well received by both the judges and visitors to the show.
Charitable gifts in wills account for over a third of Cancer Research UK’s funding. The garden aimed to pay tribute to those who have made these generous gifts to CRUK and highlight the importance these have to the work the charity does in finding a cure for all cancers.
A series of carved timber posts were positioned around the main path of the garden, these ‘Progress Stakes’ presented a timeline of CRUK’s history charting important discoveries and pieces of research.
Around the outside of the garden a second series of carved posts were displayed, each engraved with the name of someone who has pledged a gift to the charity in their wills. By pairing these ‘Pledge Stakes’ with the ‘Progress Stakes’, the garden aimed to pay tribute to the charity’s supporters and make the important connection between these pledges of support and the important progress CRUK has made in finding a cure for all cancers.
The garden was a walkthrough space with a curved sunken seating area and water feature at its centre. Visitors to the show were invited to walk into the garden and take a moment to sit, pause and reflect on the bespoke limestone bench and polished concrete pebble seats, courtesy of Ben Barrell Sculpture.
A bright and bold colour palette of purples, pinks and oranges accented with tones of silver and rust were incorporated into the planting scheme. Curved Taxus hedges added privacy to the garden and framed views into the garden. Taxus hedging was chosen for its affiliation to cancer treatment as the source of drugs used in treating patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Oversize sawn limestone paving units create two distinct seating areas, nestled amongst the naturalistic planting. Limestone gravel offers offers textural interest and lower maintenance gardening. A simple bowl introduces the reflective, calming quality of water.
A unified boundary treatment of hornbeam hedge and pleached hornbeam trees give the garden improved privacy and visual harmony. Four multi-stem hornbeam trees offer sculptural form, helping to shape the space within the garden.

Our client recently purchased a newly-constructed home in order to downsize and have a low- maintenance home and yard. The existing side yard/back yard was undeveloped by the builder, leaving the homeowner with the huge challenge of creating a great outdoor entertaining space for family and friends, while creating privacy and overcoming the over 8-foot steep drop from the existing back porch down to the alley.
The grade was the largest challenge because the space was so narrow with such a large fall from existing porch to the property line. The second largest challenge is that this residence is located in a semi-private community where HOA approval of plans and materials is difficult, as all the residences here share a similar look and feel with a very clean and contemporary aesthetic.
We had to precisely shoot grades to know what kinds of retaining walls would need to be constructed along with how much backfill soil and dirt movement would need to be done. After that the design had to carefully consider the space with maximum functionality for outdoor entertainment with newly constructed walls to ensure it would last for many years to come. All of this was done with multiple meetings with the homeowners who are a retired engineer and active architect themselves. Once a design was settled upon, then submission to the HOA board of approval had to be completed and signed off on with all questions and concerns answered for the community by-laws.
The two biggest difficulties within the construction phase were that the neighbor next to the back yard had a large retaining wall not properly backfilled up to the property line. That neighbor wouldn’t allow us proper access and control to help alleviate the issues, so we had to skillfully work around this to ensure what we constructed would last, despite their property not being properly addressed. We also had to go through multiple shipments from the manufacturer due to large variances in the material’s appearance on the steps and another shipment that was broken during shipping. These two things delayed the project we were working to complete before the spring so the homeowner could have the maximum use of the space this year.
Topping off this challenging construction was a beautiful palette of native grasses, rosemary, groundcover, granite walkways, and synthetic grass to ensure year-round, practically effortless beauty.

minimal windows sliding doors were installed to this new glass box extension. The minimal windows system works exceptionally well in glass extensions as they create a cohesive minimalistic aesthetic alongside the frameless structural glass box. They also allow ventilation into the property and can be opened as much or a little as required to achieve the desired amount of air flow.

A medley of colorful succulents, and low-water grasses and flowering plants surround the fountain providing colors and textures throughout the seasons . The removal of the dense and overgrown shrubs and trees provided more outdoor space for dining and entertaining, less maintenance. And now with site-appropriate plants and no lawn, a lower water bill for the homewoners. The low-water plants include a variety of succulents such as Sedum rupestre 'Angelina' with chartreuse green foliage, Echeveria 'Lipstick', and other succulents along with Lomandra 'seascape' (a grass-like plant), Echinacea, and Salvia. This combination offers year-round appeal and interest throughout the seasons. Photos and Design © Eileen Kelly, Dig Your Garden Landscape Design

The clients of the Brooklyn Brownstone backyard requested a serene, open, contemporary design for their space. We kept the color palette simple with greens, grays, and small pops of color from white and pink flowers and a neutral wooden tile. The two comfy lounge chairs and ottomans are from West Elm, and the table belonged to the owners prior to the installation.
