Pacific Garden DesignDespite their location just outside downtown, the homeowners have an expansive backyard abutting Lake Pend Oreille. They enjoy the space, but needed a spot to gather lakeside. A patio with natural flagstone pavers is accented with sculptural boulders and seat rocks. A gas fire pit and custom shade sail create a comfortable space for chilly nights and sunny days, maximizing the homeowners' use of the space.
Karen Rogers at KR Garden DesignThis garden was designed for a keen chef that wanted his herbs and vegetables fresh from the garden and used in his 'al fresco' cooking.
Hampton Court Small Garden
A Chef’s Kitchen was designed to inspire people to grow their own vegetables and herbs in their back garden and use them to prepare healthy and economical meals outdoors. A wood-burning stove was the focal point, surrounded by raised beds, trellising and a pergola, which were all planted with vegetables and herbs. Inspired by recent popular cookery programmes, the garden aimed to motivate people to cook al fresco taking advantage of fresh ingredients and creating healthy and delicious food.

Mariani LandscapeBenefiting from varied stone and gravel hardscapes, this back yard is used in many ways. Transitions are marked with a change in structure of paths, walls, and features. The dining area is defined by a seat wall that ends where the fire feature area starts. Garden beds surround the space as an accent, softening the space. Karl Harrison Landscapes LtdWe often see side gardens and forget about them. They’re unloved and underutilised just because they can be a bit small and dark. This particular side garden could be seen from inside the client’s home. It was time to give it some love and much needed revitalising.
Karl carried out the initial site survey understanding this space needed a redesign but also needed to be mindful of the ongoing damp. The clients changed the window as a preventative measure.
Taking a look at the rest of the garden it’s filled with ferns and many other beautiful plants. From here Karl decided to continue this very organic theme in the side garden. Avoiding interrupting the damp course there would need to be a stepped arrangement. These steps would also allow access to the water butts at the top. The client uses these to sustainably water the rest of the garden.
Karl kept the materials pallet simple and natural choosing French oak sleepers paired with natural York stones stepping stones, gravel and planting. This scheme can then be left alone to grow and be admired from inside the home. Adding more detail to the sleepers by hand using chisels, routers and sanders gave them an incredibly rustic aesthetic. In these pictures this the French Oak sleepers have been treated with Owatrol Textrol oil with a Honey tint to give them a warmer richer colour.
A J Miller Landscape Architecture PLLCI have never been very found of rock boulder walls but on this property they had already been installed. We reworked the walls and entrance and I choose to use plants that like minimal soil depths, well drained soil and in full sun. The plants selected are alpine and rock garden plants with flowering perennials.
I must say that the color and year round interest in it's first season only has been glorious. The tiny plants have doubled in size in all of the 'nooks and crannies' of the rocks.

Northwest Native Landscapes LLCRainwater is celebrated as the focal point in this backyard garden. The angled deck provides enough space for a morning coffee, then transitions down onto a natural stone patio for large gatherings. A deep plant bed was created against the garage to showcase plant textures and soften the patio space. The curved edge of the patio mimics the irregular shape of the corner rain garden, with a gently sloping lawn in between the two spaces. Natural boulders form the edge of the rain garden, while swaths of rushes and other water-loving plants provide all season interest.
