Karl Harrison Landscapes LtdGarden Makeover Using Millboard in Harefield
This garden had been used until it couldn’t really be used anymore. The pine decking was falling apart and really wasn’t safe. The clients called Karl in to help make the garden a usable space that could be enjoyed again.
Starting by clearing the garden which took 3 eight-yard skips. The team then used an excavator to define the elevation differences. Now the team had space to build a new deck. The client chose Millboard Limed Oak decking because they liked the colour and natural texture. The step on this deck also has a hidden LED strip routed into the underside of the board. This is controlled via a remote that also controls the water feature and various garden spotlights.
The team also installed a new fake lawn so George the tortoise has a space to wander around that is separate from the decking area.
The clients keep a range of animals in their garden including some rabbits and guinea pigs that dwell in hutches. To help make these hutches more a part of the garden the team moved them to the back left corner. The client used Cranesbill purple geraniums and Athyrium Ferns to help disguise the area.

Aralia: Innovation in Landscape DesignPatricia’s garden is an eclectic mix of both traditional & contemporary surrounding her 18th Century Thatched Cottage. She is passionate about edible gardening and so proudly sites 4 raised vegetable beds in her front garden, together with a large pottage border for productive planting, edged with a crisp low Buxus hedge. Central to the front garden is an established Willow which sets off the cottage beautifully. Access to the side of the house is through a decorative metal gate, through to a contemporary Courtyard garden which is minimalist in style and made private with a tall Taxus (Yew) hedge and contains a Balau hardwood deck for early morning breakfast and tea. A contemporary border with Miscanthus and Phlomis, mulched with slate, links the contemporary courtyard garden through to the rear garden. Patricia’s rear garden is very much about entertaining and she was fortunate enough to reinstall her RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2009 Garden (Outdoor Kitchen ‘Freshly Prepped’) into her own garden, so this nests in a corner, and is bordered by buttery yellow Bamboos (Phyllostachys aurea). The outdoor kitchen includes a Green Wall, massive hardwood chopping board, breakfast bar, sofa area, wine chiller and even a kitchen sink! There are 3 seating areas in total here, a powdery blue pergola adjacent to the cottage, covered with Wisteria, Clematis and a Vine, and a further raised hardwood deck (Ipe) which houses an elegant chocolate brown rattan dining table and chairs. There are elements of sculpture/ornaments dotted around, including 2 Iron Cats decorating a wall, and a pair of coppery Herons.

Karl Harrison Landscapes LtdOn this project our clients knew when they first moved in that the decking looked a little ropy. They took a step out onto the decking to have their foot go straight through it. Ouch… They searched online for advice and found Karl through The Decking Network. Karl visited to carry out a site survey and understand what the client needed. From here he was able to promptly put a quotation together.
Once the quotation was agreed this project start to finish took 5 days to remove the old decking, install the new decking and install the custom Accoya ® balustrade. We used recycled plastic posts too, this deck won’t be going anywhere for a long time. The Millboard decking also has a 25-year warranty because it’s installed by an approved installer.

greencube garden and landscape designWe have designed a focal point fireplace within a tiny space, breaking up the overbearing retaining wall and draping the planting down over the wall to soften.
In small gardens we often use large specimen plants and sculptural oversized pots; being so bold in such as a small space really works. The existing retaining wall has been dressed and divided to make it less overbearing and oppressive. We have painted the fence black further emphasising the plants. We have included some uplighting behind the large pots to backlight as well as under the trees to make this a very appealing garden at night. We have set a bio-ethanol firebowl within the burnt orange-painted fireplace, creating a focus point. Bold leafy planting includes Fatsia, Erybotria and Dicksonia.
