Amber Freda Garden DesignThis Brooklyn Heights townhouse backyard features a bluestone patio and custom-built ipe wood planter boxes. The quiet, Zen-like backyard is shaded by surrounding buildings, so we picked a shade-tolerant mix of dogwoods, rose-of-sharons, rhododendrons, and Japanese andromedas to plant here. It features a bench carved from a tree trunk. When choosing plants that will do well in shade, I find it's generally helpful to think about the types of plants that do well in a woodland environment. Designed and built as a speculative house, the Spring Hill Residence includes 4,300 square feet of living area and a detached garage and upper level unit located in the west of market area of Kirkland.
Spring Hill Residence was selected as the September 2000 Seattle Times/AIA Home of the Month and was featured in the February 25, 2000 Pacific Northwest Magazine. Awarded Best Custom Residence by the Master Builders Association, 2001.
Amber Freda Garden DesignThis contemporary Boerum Hill, Brooklyn backyard features an ipe fence, bluestone patio, artificial turf lawn, and a neatly lined up row of hornbeam trees. Westover Landscape DesignOften, less is more. Take this landscape design composed of climbing roses, hydrangeas, and lilies surrounding a bluestone terrace. This small, suburban garden feels both expansive and intimate. Japanese forest grass softens the edge of the terrace and adds just enough of a modern look to make the garden’s owners, urban transplants, happy. “My husband and I were looking for an outdoor space that had a secret-garden feeling,” says homeowner Anne Lillis-Ruth. “We’ve had fun adding furniture, antique planters, and a stone fountain to [landscape designer] Robert Welsch’s beautiful landscape. The white and green plantings provide the perfect backdrop to my collection of colorful table linens, glassware, and china. We love our garden!”
Dean Fisher loved it, too. “The setting is so lovely and relaxed. It evokes the south of France, with its intimate scale and the integration of house and patio through the use of the vines and other plantings.”
Creative Outdoor SpacesThe side yard gate located on a hillside was best served to create a landing to level both sides of gate. Flagstone steps were added along with boulder accents and retaining walls, to create a welcoming side yard entry and transition with an expanded garden setting.
Little Miracles Designs - TorontoThe approach to this backyard was to turn the orientation of the design to take attention away from the squareness of the space. A cozy conversation nook was designed with a raised planter behind.
