Fast forward to 2020, when the house went on the market! By then it was clear that three children and a busy home design studio couldn't be crammed into this efficient footprint. But what's second best to moving into your dream home? Being asked to redesign the functional core for the family that was.
In this classic Flansburgh layout, all the rooms align tidily in a square around a central hall and open air atrium. As such, all the spaces are both connected to one another and also private; and all allow for visual access to the outdoors in two directions—toward the atrium and toward the exterior. All except, in this case, the utilitarian galley kitchen. That space, oft-relegated to second class in midcentury architecture, got the shaft, with narrow doorways on two ends and no good visual access to the atrium or the outside. Who spends time in the kitchen anyway?
As is often the case with even the very best midcentury architecture, the kitchen at the Flansburgh House needed to be modernized; appliances and cabinetry have come a long way since 1970, but our culture has evolved too, becoming more casual and open in ways we at SYH believe are here to stay. People (gasp!) do spend time—lots of time!—in their kitchens! Nonetheless, our goal was to make this kitchen look as if it had been designed this way by Earl Flansburgh himself.
The house came to us full of bold, bright color. We edited out some of it (along with the walls it was on) but kept and built upon the stunning red, orange and yellow closet doors in the family room adjacent to the kitchen. That pop was balanced by a few colorful midcentury pieces that our clients already owned, and the stunning light and verdant green coming in from both the atrium and the perimeter of the house, not to mention the many skylights. Thus, the rest of the space just needed to quiet down and be a beautiful, if neutral, foil. White terrazzo tile grounds custom plywood and black cabinetry, offset by a half wall that offers both camouflage for the cooking mess and also storage below, hidden behind seamless oak tambour.

Drury DesignThis remodel was designed to celebrate the original use of the structure, focusing on a 1930’s automobile theme. The design features ample storage without overbearing wall cabinets and also, vintage looking appliances. The homeowner wanted to remove the soffit and rework the supply and return air to better balance the temperature in the space. To do so, the entire space was reinsulated with closed cell insulation to provide the best insulation for our cold winters and hot summers.
The homeowner opted for a custom artisan hood paired with metal open shelves to tie into the industrial era of the original space from the 1930s. The Matte Black with Bronze accents paired with vintage hardware on the range also picks up on the details of the Classic cars once parked in this coach house. The silkscreen marble tiles appear to be wallpaper yet is both heat resistant and effective for these aspiring chefs
The enlarged island now can seat four and houses a larger sink with trash bins that open with a tap of the knee. As per the client’s request, the refrigerator now blends into the cabinetry appearing more like the tall cabinets on the south wall than an appliance.
The new kitchen is not only stunning but practical as it has double the storage or the old kitchen without lining the room with cabinetry.

Handmade Kitchen CoSituated just south of Kensington Palace and Gardens (one of the most prestigious locations in London), we find this lovely slim U-shaped kitchen full of style and beauty. Smaller in size but the sleek lines are still evident in this project within the tall cornices and external skirting. We loved working in this stately Victorian building!
Our client’s luxury bespoke kitchen journey began with a visit to The Handmade Kitchen Co showroom. The couple were able to see the exquisite quality of our furniture for themselves which would provide them with a unique and personal space that would be loved for many years to come.
Our client wanted to showcase their impeccably good taste and opted for our Traditional Raised shaker. It has been highlighted with a black paint hand-painted onto the cabinets known as Black Beauty by Benjamin Moore. It’s a rich shade of black with a hint of warmth. Versatile and sophisticated, black is a colour that can enhance any style of home, whether cosy or chic, soft or bold. Incorporating black paint, whether subtly or boldly, can make a significant impact on interior design.
This kitchen isn’t just a culinary experience but is designed to make memories with loved ones in the space they call the heart of the home.
Enhancing the cooking journey is the Rangemaster Classic Deluxe 110cm Dual Fuel Range Cooking in Black & Brass Trim which has been put alongside the cutting-edge Westin Prime extractor.
Having a clear direction of how our clients wanted their kitchen style, they opted for a Nivito Brass sink, Quooker PRO3 Fusion Round Tap in Gold & Quooker Cube and a Quooker Soak Dispenser in Gold. All three items instantly add grandeur to the space, while maintaining a balanced and understated presence.
To offset the boldness of the Black Beauty cabinetry, the Calacatta Viola Marble Honed worktops provide a striking contrast with their pristine polished finish. This juxtaposition creates a visually captivating and inviting kitchen space.
The intricate features make up the kitchen design and the ones in this space are the decorative cornices and the Armac Martin ‘Bakes’ cabinet handles in burnished brass.
Throughout this London townhouse, there was beautiful scribing in each room. Our client wanted it to flow nicely throughout the whole property and added it to the rooms we designed – the kitchen and bedroom. Adding to the theme and grandeur of the building, these decorative cornices look beautiful amongst the high ceilings.
CRL StoneCreating a sleek, modern and minimal new-look in a traditional 1960s built home, Luna Bianco is the ideal choice for a busy family kitchen that needs to work hard and look good.
When the owners of the three-bed semi-detached property in Cheshire approached CSS Granite for help sourcing the perfect worksurface to complement their choice of handleless furniture in timeless matt white, Luna Bianco by CRL Stone was suggested as the ideal solution.
Extended to create a larger kitchen and living area, the space, measuring around 7m long by 4m wide, was designed to be functional and modern, with a working kitchen complete with island at the centre of the room.
The handleless furniture is sleek and modern, giving the kitchen a light, airy feel, with the homeowners envisaging a white stone worktop with a slight pattern as a practical solution. Matching shades of white can be more complex than it sounds, however, and after much searching, the property owners were unable to find the ideal surface with a non-repetitive, soft pattern that they wanted.
Until that is, they were shown a sample of Luna Bianco. “When we saw a sample of Luna Bianco we instantly understood that this was the one. We arranged to go and see a full size slab of the stone and we liked it even more. It is very original, very different from any stone we had looked at. We like that it has golden shades as well as grey and white,” the homeowner explains.
una Bianco (Super Honed) is a cool grey and white quartz surface featuring cloud-like swirls and soft grey veining. With all the enduring and durable qualities CRL Quartz offers, this extremely versatile design can be paired with a multitude of colour palettes and textural design elements.
“Our kitchen has a lot of stone including the splashbacks, worktops and the island with waterfalls. We had some concerns that it could be very busy with too much pattern. However there was no need to worry, Luna Bianco looks wonderful and the pattern is very subtle. We also like its matt finish, which again is very modern and different from most stones,” comments the homeowner.
With the hob integrated into the central island, seating running along its length and a long black pendant lighting above, this is now the perfect space for cooking and socialising.
